Multiple people are feared dead after a boat carrying 95 people sank on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, with rescue operations underway.
Police report that 90 passengers and five crew were aboard when the vessel capsized, but ticket sales indicate up to 114 adults may have been on board, and there could have been additional children below ticketing age.
Witnesses say the boat left in the morning amid adverse weather conditions and was apparently hit by a wave, overturning and sinking.
Lake Kariba is one of the world’s largest man‑made reservoirs, providing hydroelectric power to Zimbabwe and Zambia, supporting transport, fishing, and local communities.
Local MP Mutsa Murombedzi posted a video on X showing the vessel before departure and called for an accurate headcount of those aboard.
Police will release casualty figures and survivor counts once investigations are complete.
