The initial shock collapsed buildings, sparked fires, and killed 13 people, while dozens more are in cardiopulmonary arrest— an early‑stage term used by Japanese emergency reports.
Over the next 24 hours, more than 100 aftershocks have rattled the area. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warns residents to brace for potential seismic intensity up to level 7, especially over the next two or three days.
Among the most devastating was a sudden explosion at the Aeon Mall in Kashima town. White smoke billowed as the second‑floor of the mall collapsed. The mall president confirmed three workers died and three others remain missing, while 4,700 staff members were employed at the site. The disaster prompted the transfer of 300 air‑conditioning units to the hottest parts of the city.
Rescue teams are digging through rubble at paper factories and retail malls amid 35 °C temperatures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the sweep as a “race against time” to locate trapped survivors. Over 4,600 personnel have deployed across the region, with countless residents in evacuation centres and power outages affecting thousands of homes.
Other affected areas include a factory in Yatsushiro City where two workers were found dead and nine others unaccounted for. Cracked roads and burning buildings were captured in NHK footage as train services halted and emergency crews worked under the searing heat.
The quake’s shallow epicentre—10 km deep—was 20 km south of Kumamoto city. The magnitude remains subject to fine‑tuning as seismologists update data. Authorities urge the public to stay vigilant for aftershocks and to follow safety protocols in the heat.
