In brief

Overnight, Russian forces launched a comprehensive drone and missile campaign against Kyiv, causing the first major strike on the capital in more than two weeks. At least one person died and several residents remain trapped under a collapsed building. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the plight of civilians while Poland activated fighter jets to protect its airspace under NATO Article 5. The attack, witnessed by tracer fire and explosions, set multiple fires ablaze across Kyiv. Ukraine’s resilience is under fresh scrutiny as officials investigate the damage to emergency services and civilian infrastructure.

Russian armed drones and missiles lit up the night sky over Kyiv, striking residential districts and emergency facilities. The overnight assault resulted in one confirmed death and caused a wave of evacuations across multiple neighbourhoods.

"Some people remain trapped under the rubble of a collapsed nine‑storey apartment block," warned Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko as rescue teams braced to reach stranded civilians.

Across the city, tracer fire from air‑defence radar systems illuminated the sky while drones, cruise and ballistic missiles clanged, creating a tense mix of fire and echo. Firefighters responded to several blaze sites, including a damaged ambulance station that left one person critically injured.

Poland, a NATO member, activated its fighter jets as a preventive measure. Polish military officials announced on X that their airspace would be monitored for any hostile activity adjacent to threatened regions, highlighting the broader regional tensions sparked by Russia’s renewed campaign.

This bombing night marks the first major strike in Kyiv after a lull of more than two weeks. In spite of the ceasefire, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently cut short a visit to Dublin after he cited fresh intelligence pointing to Moscow’s plans to strike the capital.

As Kyiv mourns the loss and mourns the damage, the city’s emergency services continue to counteract the extensive fires, liaise with rescue agencies, and safeguard civilian lives.
