The New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA championship victory spilled into the streets, but the jubilant celebration devolved into violence.
Late on Saturday night, crowds swelled around Times Square and Midtown Manhattan, and gunfire rang out early Sunday night. Police reports of a 17‑year‑old struck in the foot, and the victim was taken to hospital by an NYPD vehicle.
Five school buses that had chaperoned World Cup fans back to Times Square were set on fire or largely destroyed. Bystanders photographed themselves climbing the roofs and inside buses, while others shouted chants and filmed the chaos.
The NYPD deployed riot gear, mounted units and a large number of officers, but gangs of people continued to brandish objects, fire bottles and throw fireworks at police. Ten officers were reported injured, including one punched in the face and another struck by a glass bottle.
In total, 63 people were arrested on charges ranging from assault on a police officer to criminal possession of a weapon. A firearm was recovered from the area. The city announced a planned parade and civic ceremony to honour the Knicks’ victory, urging residents to keep celebrations safe.
