An Australian woman accused of deliberately serving a fatal mushroom lunch testified in her trial that she wanted the meal to be "special." Erin Patterson, 50, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering three people and attempting to kill another during a gathering at her home in regional Victoria in July 2023. She claims the incident was an unfortunate accident and that she never intended to harm her loved ones.
The court proceedings, which have lasted six weeks, highlighted an unusual nature for Patterson to host such events. During her testimony, she acknowledged this rarity, stating her motivation for the dinner was to discuss a health issue and express gratitude to her relatives. Tragically, her guests—Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, 66—became ill after the meal and later died from complications related to death cap mushroom poisoning.
Pastor Ian Wilkinson, Heather's husband, was also affected but survived after being hospitalized. Erin's estranged husband, Simon Patterson, had been invited to the lunch but opted out the day prior. Over 50 witnesses have testified against Patterson, with her becoming the first defense witness earlier this week.
Cross-examination revealed Patterson’s complicated relationships with her guests. She initially misled them into thinking a health discussion was needed, citing cancer treatment while hiding plans for weight-loss surgery. The judge and prosecution raised concerns about her invitations and implied motives, suggesting a premeditated intent to harm.
Emotional testimony revealed Patterson’s distress as she defended her love for the deceased. She discussed her decisions in the days following the lunch, where she became aware that the beef Wellington might unintentionally contain foraged mushrooms. Testimonies revealed further complications with her actions post-lunch, including misleading authorities about the mushrooms and disposing of a food dehydrator.
The prosecution has pressed Patterson on conflicting messages that portray her true feelings towards her in-laws and husband, suggesting that her external demeanor concealed deeper animosities. Patterson has denied these allegations, describing her relationships with her guests as genuine. She expressed uncertainty over her usage of an online tool indicating death cap mushroom locations near her home, distancing herself from claims of intent.
The trial is now expected to extend beyond the original six-week timeline, as further cross-examinations continue next week.
