IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Democrat Jackie Norris ended her campaign for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat Thursday, saying she would focus on her job leading the Des Moines public school board following the superintendent’s arrest by immigration authorities. Norris indicated that the Sept. 26 detention of Superintendent Ian Roberts by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement demanded her focus as chair of the board, putting 'our community, and me personally in the crosshairs of vicious and coordinated attacks.' She expressed that these realities diverted her attention from effectively advocating for children, families, educators, and caregivers. Norris plans to guide the board through significant transitions, including appointing an interim superintendent and seeking voter support for a $265 million school bond in November while participating in investigations regarding Roberts' employment. Norris's exit narrows the Democratic primary field, which now features several male candidates vying for the seat being vacated by Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican not seeking reelection after serving two terms. Meanwhile, on the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson competes against former state Sen. Jim Carlin for the nomination. With recent electoral trends favoring Republicans, the race remains challenging for Democrats, who are focused on holding or gaining seats amidst a political landscape that previously favored Trump.
