Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith is set to testify publicly next week regarding his investigations into President Donald Trump that led to two indictments. Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, confirmed in a Fox News interview that Smith will appear before the panel on January 22. Smith had previously provided closed-door testimony, where he stated that the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol would not have occurred without Trump's influence.
Smith's investigations focused on Trump's retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results after losing to Democrat Joe Biden. These investigations resulted in indictments which were paused following Trump's successful bid for re-election in November 2024, due to Department of Justice opinions that prevent indicting a sitting president.
One of Smith's legal representatives, Lanny Breuer, indicated last week that Smith is prepared to answer questions in this upcoming public hearing, emphasizing the significance of the investigations into Trump's alleged election interference and mishandling of classified information. In response to the investigations, Trump has alleged that the Justice Department was weaponized against him as he sought to reclaim the presidency.
