However, as the airport prepares for a new mystery attraction, the giant statues will be carefully stored without a clear plan for their return. The figures, originally crafted by Wētā Workshop, are home to a sculpture of Gandalf riding on one of the eagles and have been significant for fans of the Tolkien universe. Wellington Airport Chief Executive Matt Clarke expressed sentiments of melancholy regarding their removal, while reassuring visitors that Smaug the Magnificent will remain on display. Future plans for a unique, local-themed replacement exhibit are in the works, with an official announcement expected later this year.

Wellington Airport to Bid Farewell to Iconic Hobbit Eagles for New Exhibit
Wellington Airport is set to remove its iconic eagle sculptures inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings franchises to make room for an upcoming exhibit.
The celebrated eagle sculptures that have adorned Wellington Airport for over a decade will soon be taken down, according to airport authorities. The large figures, which are made up of lightweight polystyrene and stand tall at 15 meters with a weight of 1.2 tonnes, are emblematic of New Zealand's cinematic landscape. Unveiled in 2013 during the launch of The Hobbit trilogy, these sculptures have served as a cultural symbol for the airport and the region's tourism sector.
