In brief
This week, wildfires ravaged over 11,000 acres of the Greek island of Chios, with a 35-year-old housekeeper arrested after officials reported she was smoking near an ignited area.
A major wildfire incident unfolded on Chios Island as five blazes erupted, leading to the arrest of a Georgian housekeeper on Tuesday. Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis, spokesperson for the Hellenic Fire Service, confirmed that the woman was detained after being linked to the fires, which collectively destroyed vast forest areas. Over 400 firefighters were mobilized to battle the flames threatening more than a dozen villages. The first fire broke out on Sunday, with subsequent blazes igniting on Monday amid scorching and windy conditions, typically prevalent as Greece enters its summer wildfire season. The Hellenic Fire Service has identified the fires as suspicious due to their simultaneous occurrence in multiple locations, prompting a detailed investigation into arson.Despite the damage, the bulk of Chios's unique mastic trees, crucial for local economy and tourism, remained safe as the fires did not reach the southern regions of the island. Prior wildfires have endangered these trees, which are integral in producing resin used in various industries. Fire containment efforts successfully brought most fires under control by Thursday, alleviating immediate threats but highlighting ongoing climate change challenges faced by Greece.
