CHICAGO (AP) — A daycare employee at a Chicago preschool was detained by immigration authorities during the busy morning drop-off on Wednesday, raising concerns and anger among parents.

Witnesses reported the employee dashed into the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center just as ICE agents pulled into the parking lot. As the officers approached, she was apprehended between two glass doors while insisting she was a U.S. citizen. Video footage from the scene shows officers wearing 'POLICE ICE' clothing as they questioned staff and parents outside the facility.

This incident occurred alongside 'Operation Midway Blitz,' which has seen over 3,000 immigration arrests in the Chicago area within weeks. Authorities have adopted aggressive tactics, including nighttime raids and the use of tear gas, prompting public outcry.

After the arrest, Rayito de Sol closed its Chicago location for the day, leaving many parents frustrated. Esmeralda Rosales, whose child’s teacher was taken, described the situation as 'terrible,' expressing her support for the staff members, whom she described as kind and dedicated.

Chris Widen, another parent, criticized the timing of the aggressive operation, highlighting that it occurred during a peak drop-off period, causing unnecessary trauma for children and families. Many parents expressed their outrage outside the daycare, vocally supporting the staff and condemning immigration enforcement actions that disrupt the community.

The facility, part of a network operating locations in Illinois and Minnesota, did not respond to requests for comments following the incident. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security also remained silent regarding the matter.

This situation reflects ongoing tensions in Chicago, a city known for its stance against cooperation with federal immigration authorities, as officials and community members navigate the impact of aggressive immigration policies in their neighborhoods.
