Multiple people have fallen ill after opening a suspicious package delivered to the base of operations for Air Force One.
A spokesperson for Joint Base Andrews (JBA) in Maryland, near the US capital, Washington DC, confirmed that the building where the package was opened was evacuated, and those taken ill were reportedly in a stable condition as assessed by medical staff.
Reports indicate that the package contained an unidentified white powder, raising concerns and prompting further investigation.
The air base is crucial as it houses the US presidential plane and is the usual departure point for presidential trips.
Authorities evacuated the building and a nearby structure as a precautionary measure while establishing a cordon around the area. First responders determined there was no immediate threat and operations have since resumed. An ongoing investigation is examining the contents of the package, including political propaganda included within.
Initial tests conducted by a Hazmat team did not identify any hazardous materials. However, details regarding the illnesses experienced by those who were near the package remain unclear.
