Potential Impact of Asteroid 2024 YR4 Raises Alarm Among Astronomers

Experts warn that asteroid 2024 YR4 now poses the highest recorded risk to Earth, surpassing the infamous threat from Apophis.

Astronomers have issued a cautionary update regarding asteroid 2024 YR4, marking it as the most imminent threat to Earth from a sizable space object. This asteroid, detected in December, is estimated to be between 130 and 300 feet long and is expected to closely approach Earth in 2032, with a 3.1 percent chance of impacting the planet on December 22. This probability exceeds that of Apophis, the massive asteroid which sparked concerns in 2004 with an initial impact possibility of 2.7 percent for 2029. However, further observations ultimately deemed Apophis’s chance of hitting Earth to be negligible.

Although smaller than Apophis, 2024 YR4 could still cause substantial damage upon impact due to its kinetic energy, dictated by its mass and speed of 38,000 miles per hour. Current uncertainty regarding its density complicates the prediction of the potential devastation it could inflict if it were to strike Earth. Potential impact zones for 2024 YR4 enter near large urban centers, including Bogotá, Lagos, and Mumbai, though much of its path crosses unpopulated oceans.
