In brief
In a strikingly creative move, the Metropolitan Police utilized undercover officers dressed as Batman and Robin to combat street gambling and protect unsuspecting tourists.
In a surprising twist to crime fighting, the Metropolitan Police in London deployed officers in superhero costumes to apprehend scammers exploiting tourists near Parliament. Footage released on Friday captured the unorthodox operation, where the duo tackled an illegal gambling scheme during an operation earlier this year. The disguised officers, Inspectors Darren Watson and Abdi Osman, portrayed Batman and Robin respectively, as they approached a street hustler running a rigged game of chance similar to "three-card monte." The operation, filmed in February, showcased Batman navigating through a crowd on Westminster Bridge while Robin trailed behind. The suspect was arrested, and a "cup and ball game" was seized by authorities.According to police reports, the game is notorious for tricking players in a manner that always ensures a loss due to sleight of hand, targeting tourists unfamiliar with the illegal gambling laws in the U.K. A 2017 police statement highlighted that many victims are unwitting tourists, who are often approached by these con artists. The Metropolitan Police’s unconventional tactic of using pop culture characters has drawn attention not only to the operations against fraud but also to the ongoing efforts to ensure tourist safety in London.
