A single fault in Ghana’s national power grid caused extensive outages across the country, leaving the capital Accra, the commercial hub Kumasi and many northern regions dark.
Ghana Grid Company Ltd. said several power plants were shut down early Wednesday morning as engineers worked to restore supply safely. The source of the fault is still under investigation.
The blackout affected businesses, households and transport services, making it difficult for commuters to pay for ride‑hailing services and for schools to operate.
Historically, the country has endured frequent power shortages known as dumsor. Recent gas‑fired generation has reduced cuts, but aging hydropower units still leave the grid vulnerable.
