Belgian car salesman turned Prince after DNA test

In an unexpected royal announcement, Prince Laurent of Belgium has officially recognised 26‑year‑old Clément Vandenkerckhove as his son and heir, a claim confirmed by a DNA test last year.

Clément, who until now operated a local car dealership, began a personal relationship with the royal couple through his mother, singer Wendy Van Wanten. A Flemish television documentary captured the moment when the young man first met his future father at a shopping centre in 2013, unaware of his identity.

The formal adoption took place during a modest town‑hall ceremony half a year ago. While he now holds the title of prince, the new heir will not receive a palace allowance and is excluded from the Belgian line of succession.

Clément expressed pride in his family name, saying he would not abandon the Vandenkerckhove surname even as he embraces his royal heritage. The decision underscores Belgium’s evolving approach to monarchy, where personal ties can reshape traditional roles.
