Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Hospitalized After Jail Health Concerns

Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken from Adiala jail and transported to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad after reports of his deteriorating health.

His transfer followed a ruling by a three‑judge panel of the Supreme Court that required Khan to be examined by physicians within 48 hours.

The former leader, who has been imprisoned since 2023 on a series of corruption and state‑safeguarding charges, has claimed the accusations are driven by political motives.

Khan’s legal team has highlighted his serious health conditions, including poor eyesight, and noted that he has not received adequate specialist care while behind bars.

In a February statement, a lawyer documented Khan’s remaining 15 % vision in his right eye, a claim disputed by government officials.

The Supreme Court judges emphasized their duty to preserve the life, health, dignity, and safety of the prisoner, and ordered that an eye specialist participate in his treatment.

The ruling also cautioned supporters not to gather outside the hospital, citing a breach of court orders should such protests occur.

Khan’s political saga includes serving as Pakistan’s Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 and his earlier role as captain of the national cricket team.

After his August 2023 arrest, the legal system has pursued over one hundred cases against him, ranging from alleged leaks of state secrets to accusations of falsifying government gifts.

Bushra Bibi, his wife, alongside Khan was sentenced to 17 years in prison in May 2023.

The incarceration sparked widespread protests and a subsequent crackdown by authorities, illustrating the ongoing political tension in Pakistan.
