Recovery of crucial flight recorders marks progress in uncovering the cause of the deadly Air India flight crash.

Investigators have successfully retrieved the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) from the wreckage of Air India flight AI171, which tragically crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The CVR, alongside the flight data recorder, is essential for understanding the circumstances surrounding the disaster, which claimed the lives of at least 270 people. A comprehensive investigation is underway, with support from international agencies and ongoing identification efforts for victims' remains.

Investigators have made a significant breakthrough in the Air India flight AI171 crash investigation by recovering the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). This vital tool aids in determining the reasons behind the plane's crash shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, which tragically resulted in at least 270 fatalities, primarily passengers.

The wreckage of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner revealed both the CVR and the flight data recorder (FDR); together, these devices—often referred to as the "black box"—are key to uncovering the final moments of the flight. The CVR captures essential audio recordings from the cockpit, including communication among pilots, alarms, and surrounding sounds. The FDR monitors critical flight data like altitude and speed, all designed to survive the impact of a crash.

India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the inquiry, in collaboration with teams from the US and the UK. US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials were seen surveying the crash site over the weekend. It is reported that representatives from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) visited the site as well, indicating the seriousness of the investigation.

In parallel, a high-level committee set up by the Indian government is expected to convene soon to discuss the potential causes of this horrific incident. Their preliminary report, due within three months, will likely propose new standard operating procedures aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future.

As families of victims are left reeling from the tragedy, they continue to wait for the identification of their loved ones. Currently, more than 90 victims have been formally identified through DNA tests, with 47 bodies released to families. Among the deceased is former Gujarat chief minister, Vijay Rupani, whose funeral is arranged for Monday.

For other families, the identification process is painfully slow, with many remains requiring extensive forensic analysis due to severe burns from the crash. Families express deep anguish and anxiety over the drawn-out wait for news regarding their lost relatives.
