At least 22 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli air strikes across northern and central Gaza, Hamas medical and civil defense officials have said.

They reported that five sites, including residential homes, were targeted. Among the deceased was a senior Hamas commander, according to local sources.

The Israeli military asserted that it had struck these targets in response to an earlier incident in which an armed terrorist allegedly fired at Israeli soldiers after crossing a designated boundary line in the Strip. Hamas, however, has dismissed this claim.

Both factions have accused each other of breaching a ceasefire agreement established six weeks ago.

The latest operations come as continuing violence has seen over 310 Palestinians killed since the initiation of the ceasefire, per Gaza's health ministry.

On Saturday, Israeli strikes specifically targeted Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.

Five individuals were killed at the Abbas junction in the Rimal area of Gaza City, which is densely populated. Witnesses described how an Israeli strike engulfed a vehicle in flames.

Additionally, three fatalities were reported near a mosque in Deir al-Balah. In Nuseirat, two homes were struck – leading to significant casualties involving the Abu Amouneh and Abu Shawish families.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by stating that Hamas had violated the ceasefire and emphasized the need for Hamas to adhere to the agreement.

Following the latest strikes, Hamas condemned the actions, depicting them as a significant violation of the ceasefire, and called for urgent mediation and intervention, asserting that Israel is attempting to shift the existing equilibrium in the region.

This escalation follows a day after Israel commenced its offensive in Gaza in retaliation for a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in nearly 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken.

Since that attack, the death toll in Gaza has surged to at least 69,500, including 280 casualties occurring during the ceasefire period, as reported by local health officials.
