On March 1, 2025, Honduras announced it has commenced the extradition process for Eswin Mejia, who is linked to the tragic death of Sarah Root, a young Iowa woman. Mejia, accused of driving while intoxicated, crashed into Root's vehicle in Omaha in January 2016, leading to her untimely demise. The case garnered national attention, particularly as Trump highlighted it during his presidential campaign.

After being charged, Mejia managed to flee the United States following his release on bond. He was apprehended recently in a town situated approximately 125 miles from the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, and has appeared before a Supreme Court judge.

Enrique Reina, the Honduran Foreign Minister, confirmed the legal proceedings, noting that the Supreme Court ordered Mejia’s arrest and that an extradition hearing will be held. Reina mentioned that since President Xiomara Castro took office in 2022, Honduras has received over 50 extradition requests from the United States, indicating a willingness to cooperate with U.S. authorities.
