Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations has successfully raided a human trafficking operation, which was allegedly offering Kenyans jobs in Russia but was in fact preparing to send them to fight in Ukraine.
The crackdown, which took place on the outskirts of Nairobi, resulted in rescuing 22 individuals who were found in a residential apartment, reportedly awaiting arrangements to be sent abroad.
Police managed to arrest a suspect who is believed to have organized their travel plans for the months of September and October. Following his arrest, he was brought before the court to be detained for ten days as investigations continue.
Authorities expressed grave concerns over the growing trend of Kenyans falling victim to human trafficking under the guise of job opportunities. Recent reports detail cases of individuals, including young athletes, being misled into military service abroad.
The victims discovered in the raid revealed that they had entered into contracts with a foreign employment agency, promising job placements at a high cost, potentially totaling up to $18,000 for visas and other expenses. Some admitted to paying hefty deposits amounting to $1,500.
Many who return from such dubious engagements often face severe injuries, trauma, or, in some cases, do not return at all. Alarmingly, there are reports of Kenyan nationals being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine, adding to the urgency and seriousness of this issue.
The Kenyan government is closely monitoring the situation, as international authorities affirm that various nationalities, including Kenyans, are currently imprisoned amid the ongoing conflict.
