Cambodia has extradited Chen Zhi, a billionaire businessman and alleged mastermind behind a vast cryptocurrency scam, to China. Chen, along with two other Chinese nationals, was arrested on January 6 following a months-long investigation into transnational crime. U.S. authorities have accused him of running extensive internet scams that reportedly resulted in substantial global financial losses.
According to U.S. prosecutors, the case represents one of the largest financial takedowns in history and the most substantial bitcoin seizure ever recorded. Following Chen's indictment, there had been uncertainty about his whereabouts until Cambodian officials confirmed his arrest and subsequent extradition.
Chen's Cambodian nationality was revoked last month, a significant move considering he had become a Cambodian citizen in 2014 after renouncing his Chinese citizenship. The Cambodian Ministry of Interior's statement announcing the extradition did not disclose Chen's location prior to his arrest.
Reports concerning organized crime suggest that hundreds of thousands of people, primarily from China, have been trafficked to Southeast Asia under false pretenses, subsequently forced to engage in online scams. Victims face extreme conditions, often held against their will and coerced into defrauding others.
Chinese authorities have been investigating Prince Group since at least 2020, as the organization is considered a central player in various online fraud schemes. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has designated it as a significant transnational online gambling syndicate operating out of Cambodia.
Despite Chen Zhi's growing legal troubles, he has retained close ties with Cambodia's ruling elite, with the government expressing demands for sufficient evidence from the U.S. and U.K. regarding allegations against Chen and his enterprise. These developments highlight the complex interplay of organized crime and legitimacy within Cambodia's economic landscape, where fraud operations may constitute a significant part of the economy.
