LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a bizarre insurance fraud case that has captured attention, three Californian individuals have been sentenced for conducting a scheme involving a person donned in a bear costume damaging luxury vehicles.
The California Insurance Department revealed that the trio staged fake vandalism incidents within a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes, subsequently filing fraudulent claims for close to $142,000 in insurance payouts. This unusual operation was aptly named 'Operation Bear Claw.'
Two men and one woman from the Los Angeles area entered no contest pleas to felony insurance fraud, leading to sentences that include a weekend jail program followed by probation. Additionally, two of the defendants were ordered to collectively repay over $50,000 in restitution.
A fourth accomplice awaits a court hearing in September. The fraudsters allegedly provided several videos from the San Bernardino Mountains showing a bear moving within the vehicles as part of their claims. However, thorough investigation revealed, upon review by a California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist, that the presumed bear was indeed a human in a costume.
Detectives later found the bear suit in the suspects’ residence after executing a search warrant, further elucidating the lengths to which they went to concoct this scheme.
The spectacle of bears making their way into homes or rummaging through trash in search of food has increasingly become commonplace in various parts of California, leading to a growing concern among residents.
