Firefighters in the Australian state of Victoria are battling at least six major fires as a record-breaking heatwave hits the country's south-east.
Two fires are currently burning at 'emergency level' according to local broadcaster ABC News. Several communities have been issued emergency warnings to either evacuate, watch and wait, or shelter in place.
Fire officials warn that the situation is changing rapidly and have asked locals to stay up to date with the latest warnings.
The Bureau of Meteorology indicates that parts of the state have experienced unprecedented temperature highs, with one area reaching 48.9°C and Melbourne recorded at 41°C.
Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman stated that the extreme heat conditions are making it incredibly difficult for firefighters. Significant concern is arising from a new fire in the Larralea area.
Country Fire Authority (CFA) Chief Officer Jason Heffernan cautioned that ember showers from the Otways fire pose a risk of igniting new fires ahead of the main blaze.
While the extent of damage remains unclear, Australia's Deputy Incident Controller Alistair Drayton noted anecdotal evidence suggesting some homes have been lost. He commended the 'spectacular' efforts of the firefighters thus far.
A fire ban is in effect across Victoria, with South Australia also under alert for 'extreme' fire risk.
Health officials are warning of significant health risks associated with prolonged heat, particularly affecting the elderly, children, and those with underlying conditions.
Experts affirm that human-caused climate change is increasing the likelihood and intensity of heatwaves, contributing to more vigorous wildfire conditions in Australia.
