In the lead-up to the Hungarian elections scheduled for April 12, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's campaign has come under scrutiny for deploying controversial, AI-generated videos aimed at swaying public sentiment against his rival, Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party.

One such video, which went viral, portrays a heart-wrenching scene of a girl anxiously waiting for her father’s return from war, before brutally depicting his execution, purportedly by Ukrainian captors. This AI-created content has drawn sharp criticism, reinforcing claims that the Fidesz party may be resorting to false narratives as it faces a tough election battle after 16 years in power.

The Fidesz campaign has alleged that Magyar would bring danger to Hungary and advocate for participation in the conflict in Ukraine, despite opposition denouncing these assertions as unfounded. The video controversially includes messages like The video is AI-generated, but the war is real and horrific, and Magyar doesn’t want you to see it.

Critics have labeled the video's manipulation of emotions as unethical and have pointed out how such tactics, alongside a backdrop of misinformation, define the current political climate in Hungary. Magyar has responded by condemning the ad as heartless manipulation, while analysts argue that narratives instigated by the Orbán government are unprecedentedly prevalent this election cycle, particularly through the use of generative AI.

Both parties are leveraging social media to engage with voters differently; while Magyar's content typically features a relatable and youthful image, the Fidesz party has focused on fear-driven messaging. Despite the ruling party's efforts, Magyar has maintained a lead in polls, indicating that voters may be resistant to disinformation tactics as they head to the polls.
