In brief
Witnesses reported that a father dove from the Disney Dream cruise ship into the ocean on Sunday to rescue his daughter, who had plunged from the fourth deck. Video footage captured the tense moment as passengers cheered for the pair, who were successfully retrieved by a rescue boat after treading water for nearly 10 minutes. The incident reportedly occurred while the father was taking a picture of his daughter by a railing. Following the fall, a "man overboard" alert was issued, and the crew acted swiftly, slowing the ship and dispatching a boat to search for them.
"The speed of the ship made them seem like tiny dots before they disappeared completely," said passenger Laura Amador, who witnessed the incident. Once the captain turned the ship around, a tender boat was sent to assist. Disney confirmed the incident in a statement, praising their crew's prompt actions and exceptional skills in ensuring the safe return of the father and daughter. Despite the dramatic circumstances, the ship, which carries up to 4,000 passengers, returned to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a scheduled four-day cruise around the Bahamas. Incidents of passengers falling overboard are rare, and successful rescues are even more uncommon, according to a 2019 Cruise Lines International Association report, which noted that only nine out of 25 overboard cases that year ended in rescue.
