South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun has publicly addressed a controversy surrounding the late actress Kim Sae-ron, who died by apparent suicide earlier this year. In an emotional press conference held in Seoul, the 37-year-old star tearfully denied allegations made by Kim Sae-ron's family that he had dated her while she was a minor and that his agency pressured her regarding an outstanding loan.
"I can't admit to something I didn't do," Kim said during the event. The claims have created a significant backlash in South Korea, where Kim Soo-hyun is a highly regarded figure known for his roles in popular dramas such as "My Love from the Star" and the Netflix series "Queen of Tears."
The allegations surfaced in March, shortly after Kim Sae-ron's untimely death. A controversial YouTube channel claimed the couple had been in a relationship that began when Kim Sae-ron was just 15. Recently, her family's attorney presented chat histories purportedly showing their communication from when she was still a minor.
Initially, Kim Soo-hyun's agency denied the claims but later confirmed a relationship that lasted from 2019 to 2020, insisting that both individuals were of legal age at that time. During the press conference, Kim expressed regret for the suffering caused to his fans and the late actress's family, stating that their relationship was normal and devoid of any scandalous undertones.
"I never dated her when she was a minor," he asserted, highlighting that they were two consenting adults during their one-year relationship. The actor recounted his hesitation to confirm their relationship in the past, citing his responsibilities as the lead in a hit show and the potential fallout for his colleagues.
Despite being seen as one of the most promising actresses in South Korea, Kim Sae-ron faced significant online vitriol after a drink-driving incident in 2022. Her family now allege that her former agency, GoldMedalist, pressured her to repay a debt linked to that incident, leading to her mental distress. Kim Soo-hyun vehemently denied these claims, providing evidence that he claims disputes the narrative presented by her family.
Through a voice recording, the actor relayed a conversation where GoldMedalist reassured Kim Sae-ron's representatives that processes regarding the debt could allow for more response time. He accused her family of manipulating evidence and urged them to share their records with authorities.
As the public fallout continues, brands such as Prada and Dinto have severed ties with Kim, and his upcoming Disney+ project has been placed on hold. Kim Soo-hyun’s legal team has filed a criminal complaint and civil suit against Kim Sae-ron's family, seeking 12 billion won in damages.
The family has yet to respond publicly to these legal actions or to Kim's recent comments. For those affected by issues of mental health or personal struggles, resources are available through the BBC Actionline.
