Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old American influencer and teen pilot who has been stuck on King George Island in Antarctica since June, has seen charges against him dropped. Guo was accused of illegally landing his plane on the Chilean-claimed island as part of his ambitious journey to fly solo to all seven continents while raising funds for cancer research. Initially detained for allegedly providing misleading flight plans to local authorities, a judge ruled to dismiss those charges this past Monday.
In the wake of his detention, Guo was ordered to contribute $30,000 (£22,332) to a children's cancer charity and has been banned from returning to Chile for three years. During his adventure, which aims to make him the youngest person to complete such a feat, he has already accomplished visits to six continents. His journey began in Punta Arenas, where he flew his Cessna 182Q aircraft to King George Island, which is inhabited by various international research stations.
Authorities had questioned his flight plan, indicating he had only notified them of a flight over Punta Arenas. Despite his legal hurdles, Guo expressed hope for prompt approval to resume his expedition. He has been residing at a military base on the island for approximately six weeks. His journey is deeply personal; motivated by a family's plight with cancer, he aspires to raise $1 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. As Guo awaits further arrangements, he has already logged over 140 days in aircraft as he pursues his goal to contribute to cancer research while continuing his ambitious flying quest.
