In brief
A shooting outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., has left two staffers dead, invoking widespread shock and condemnation from Israeli leaders. The incident is being classified as an antisemitic attack, with implications regarding the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The shooting early Thursday morning shocked Israelis as details emerged about the fatalities—two staffers at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled the incident a "horrifying antisemitic murder." The victims, identified as Sarah Lynn Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, had just left an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum when they were attacked. Local authorities apprehended a suspect at the scene who reportedly exclaimed, “Free, free Palestine” upon arrest. The ambassador of Israel to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, revealed that the victims were a couple who were planning to get engaged. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar attributed the shooting to what he termed “toxic antisemitic incitement” that has gained traction since the onset of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. He criticized those in international bodies labeling Israel's actions as genocide and accused them of creating a hostile environment that contributed to the tragedy. The ongoing conflict, which began with Hamas's surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has had devastating consequences, claiming over 53,000 lives in Gaza, according to local health agencies. Israel remains firm in its rejection of the severe accusations directed at its military actions, stating it is responding to acts of terrorism.
