In brief

Authorities are investigating an unusual shark attack near Hadera, Israel, where a swimmer is missing after being attacked, leading to heightened beach safety concerns.

The coastal waters off Hadera, Israel, witnessed a shocking incident on Monday when a swimmer went missing following an unusual shark attack. This event occurred near the local power station, approximately 40 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. Bystanders on Olga Beach captured the frightening scene, yelling in disbelief as the chaos unfolded, with footage circulating on social media. While sharks often appear in this area, particularly due to the warm water released by the Orot Rabin power station, they are generally regarded as harmless. Since Israel's establishment in 1948, there have been no recorded fatal shark attacks, making this incident all the more alarming. The police have since closed off the beach area as search efforts commence for the missing individual. Eyewitness accounts have reported distressing moments, with one witness, Eliya Motai, describing the harrowing scene. "I was in the water, I saw blood and there were screams," he recounted to the Ynet news outlet. "We were here yesterday and saw the sharks circling us," he added.Shark experts note that the dusky and sandbar species tend to congregate in the region, lured by the warm waters and abundant fish thanks to the power plant's influence. Monday's attack marks only the fourth documented shark encounter in the nation’s history, underscoring the rarity of such an event in Israeli waters.
