Kenyan Court Sentences Murderers of Ugandan Olympian to 35 Years

The Kenyan High Court has sentenced two men, Peter Ushuru Khalumi and David Ekai Lokere, to 35 years in prison for the murder of Ugandan Olympian Benjamin Kiplagat. Kiplagat, a prominent steeplechaser who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and later events, was tragically stabbed to death on New Year’s Eve in Eldoret, a town famous for its athletic training facilities.During the sentencing, Justice Reuben Nyakundi emphasized the brutal nature of the crime, stating, “Your actions were cruel to a defenceless person whose life you cut short.” The court noted that the assailants had stalked Kiplagat before attacking him, as captured by CCTV footage, indicating a premeditated act of violence. The murder sent shockwaves through Kenya's athletic community, which has witnessed several similar tragedies involving elite athletes in recent years. Kiplagat’s mother spoke poignantly in court, urging for life sentences for the offenders, reflecting on her son's journey from a barefoot runner to an international sports figure and the family’s primary provider. She expressed her sorrow about how the killers did not rob him of his possessions, emphasizing the deliberate intention behind the attack.Although the court did not grant the maximum sentence requested by the family, they expressed their relief at the verdict and felt that justice had been served. Benjamin Kiplagat was 34 years old at the time of his death and held the record for Uganda in the 3,000m steeplechase event.
