An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck the north‑east coast of Honshu, Japan, at 1507 GMT on Wednesday, 29 October 2026, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The GFZ identified the epicenter at a depth of 49.4 km, coordinates 35.67° N, 140.59° E.

Kyodo News reported an initially preliminary magnitude of 5.5 that was subsequently revised to 5.4 and a depth of about 52 km. The Japan Meteorological Agency, as relayed by Kyodo, assessed the shaking as lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale and confirmed no tsunami threat. The quake was felt across Chiba Prefecture and reached Tokyo and surrounding prefectures such as Tochigi, Ibaraki and Saitama.

Both outlets agreed on the depth range of roughly 49–52 km and that shaking was not strong enough to pose a tsunami hazard. The only divergence was the magnitude figure, with the GFZ citing 5.4 and Kyodo initially reporting 5.5 before later codifying 5.4.
