In brief

Emergency crews are battling a rapidly spreading wildfire that has forced tens of thousands to evacuate in a region prone to devastating blazes.

The Hughes fire ignited Wednesday morning in Los Angeles County, approximately 45 miles from downtown and near Castaic Lake, an area surrounded by residential neighborhoods and schools. As of Thursday morning, the blaze has charred over 10,000 acres, driven by strong winds and dry vegetation but has so far spared residential structures. With the county already grappling with a record year of destructive fires, local officials issued mandatory evacuation orders for about 31,000 residents, with an additional 23,000 others on alert for possible evacuation.Firefighters have mobilized extensive resources to contain the flames, resulting in the fire being declared 14% contained. Despite favorable progress, conditions remained precarious due to the strong winds. Fire Chief Anthony Marrone noted they were leveraging aerial support effectively, a significant improvement compared to previous fires that saw gusts of up to 90 mph. As the flames soared, many residents scrambled to protect their homes, while thousands of inmates from a nearby jail were relocated for safety. In contrast to past devastating incidents in the area that resulted in fatalities and widespread destruction, this fire's impact on populated areas has been mitigated, with officials drawing on lessons learned from recent disasters. The state remains under a red flag warning, citing high fire risks as dry, gusty weather prevails. Further complicating recovery efforts, impending rain is forecasted to arrive this weekend, raising concerns of mudslides and flooding in areas recently impacted by fire, due to compromised soil absorption. In response to the increasing threat of flooding, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order to allocate resources for preventative measures, including thousands of sandbags to shield vulnerable locations. Local communities are remaining vigilant as they confront the dual threats posed by fire and potential flooding in the coming days.
