Australia's Jewish community is facing heightened anxiety after two alarming incidents occurred in Melbourne on Friday evening, reflecting an unsettling trend of violence against Jewish institutions in the region. The Victoria Police are actively investigating the events, which unfolded around 8 p.m. and were located approximately a mile apart.

In one incident, a man poured a flammable liquid on the front door of the East Melbourne Synagogue, which had around 20 congregants inside at the time, before igniting the fire and fleeing. Fortunately, all attendees managed to escape through a rear exit, and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the synagogue's front entrance. There were no injuries reported, and no arrests had been made as of the latest updates.

Simultaneously, a group of about 20 protesters gathered in the city center, reportedly hurling "offensive chants" at diners in an Israeli restaurant. This altercation led to the arrest of one individual for obstructing police efforts. While law enforcement did not disclose specific details about the chants, it was reported that protesters overturned tables and broke a window at the establishment. The individual apprehended was released with a summons.

Victoria's premier, Jacinta Allan, commented on the incidents, suggesting that the intentions behind both actions were clear and concerning. The local Jewish leaders and community members are urging for greater security and preventive measures in light of these disturbing acts.
