In brief

The crash between a Renfe and Iryo high‑speed train on Oct. 28 in Urda killed 68 people and injured about 80. Two South Korean passengers were among those injured, one discharged with minor cuts while the other remains hospitalized. Spanish authorities say a rail control error allowed a train to depart with a red signal.

Two South Korean nationals were reported injured when a Renfe AVE high‑speed train struck the rear of an Iryo train that had stopped on the Madrid‑Seville line near Urda in Toledo province, Spain, on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The crash caused the two rearmost carriages to derail and roll over into an embankment, killing 68 people and injuring roughly 80 passengers.

Official reports say more than 500 passengers were aboard the two trains, and that the collision was triggered after a rail control centre sent a train onto a track with a red signal in place.

According to Seoul’s foreign ministry, which Yonhap recorded, 11 South Korean passengers were on the trains; the ministry said one of the two injured Koreans sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital, while the other remains hospitalized.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of national mourning and called for stronger safety measures, while Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the accident may have been caused by a computer trigger that failed to maintain speed restrictions.
