In brief
After a series of military escalations, Iranian diplomats have initiated renewed discussions with UK, Germany, and France on nuclear agreements, addressing the future of Iran's nuclear program and potential sanctions.
Iran has recently conducted discussions with representatives from the UK, Germany, and France at its consulate in Istanbul. This marks the first engagement of its kind since Israel's strategic attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities in June, which led to a 12-day conflict involving US military action against Iranian nuclear sites. The three European nations, collectively known as the E3, have warned that they may reintroduce sanctions against Iran unless a new nuclear agreement is reached by the end of August.Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi described the meeting as "serious, frank, and detailed," indicating a willingness to continue dialogue. He previously asserted that any move to enforce sanctions would be deemed "completely illegal." The sanctions had initially been lifted following the 2015 nuclear deal, which aimed to curtail Iran's nuclear ambitions—a claim that Iran has always rejected.Under the 2015 agreement, Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear activities and permitted international inspections; however, the US's withdrawal from the deal in 2018 during Donald Trump's administration resulted in the reinstatement of all previous sanctions. In response, Iran progressively violated the stipulated restrictions. With a late-October deadline looming, the E3 have reiterated their threat to impose strict sanctions unless they see tangible limitations on Iran's nuclear program. As these discussions unfolded, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, noted that Iran had shown a willingness to partake in technical-level discussions about its nuclear activities. Grossi emphasized the necessity for Iran to maintain transparency regarding its nuclear operations.Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, urged the E3 nations to use this meeting as an opportunity to rectify their previous unconstructive policies and criticized their alignment with US-Israeli actions that he deemed aggressive. Following the June strikes, Iran's parliament halted cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog in response to increasing tensions with Israel and the US, which intensified after direct military actions against Iranian targets.Despite diplomatic efforts, the situation remains fraught, and US military actions targeting Iran's nuclear capabilities have elicited a complex and tense geopolitical landscape, driving both Iran and the E3 toward the negotiating table amidst heavy international scrutiny.
