WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to once again federalize Washington, D.C.'s police force, suggesting it could happen in response to the city’s Mayor's refusal to cooperate with immigration enforcement. Trump’s previous emergency order that allowed the federal government to take control of local law enforcement lapsed last week. Shortly before it expired, Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that the city would not aid Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in its operations within the capital.

In an early-morning social media message, Trump claimed that his past intervention had already helped reduce crime in D.C., a point backed up by Bowser, despite evidence indicating crime rates were declining prior to the federal surge. Trump warned that if cooperation with immigration authorities ceases, crime could rise again, and he would then, in his words, call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!

The media office of Mayor Bowser declined to comment on Trump's threat. The White House remained silent on whether any future federal control of D.C.'s police is planned.

Adding context, data during Trump's emergency order highlighted that over 40% of arrests were immigration-related, continuing the pursuit of stringent immigration policies amidst crime-fighting efforts. Meanwhile, the House Committee on Rules is advancing several D.C.-related proposals, including altering juvenile trial ages and limiting the district's authority in other legal matters.

The dynamics illustrate the ongoing tug-of-war between local autonomy under limited home rule established in 1973, and federal oversight, which includes significant control over budget approval and local laws.
