The wife of South Korea's imprisoned former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been arrested on multiple charges, including stock manipulation and bribery, amid a significant political scandal. Kim Keon Hee, the former first lady, faced a lengthy court session where she denied all allegations against her. However, the court has deemed it necessary to issue a detention warrant due to potential evidence tampering.
The arrest marks a significant moment in South Korea's political history, as it is unprecedented for both a former president and first lady to be jailed simultaneously. Yoon was detained earlier this year following a failed martial law attempt that led to widespread unrest and his eventual removal from office.
Prosecutors accuse Kim, who is 52 years old, of profiting over 800 million won (approximately $577,940) through her involvement in a price-rigging scheme related to stocks from Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea. Although these actions are claimed to have taken place prior to her husband’s presidency, they have cast a persistent shadow over his administration.
Additionally, Kim is said to have accepted luxury items, including Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, as bribes from the controversial Unification Church in return for business favors. She also faces accusations of improperly influencing candidate selections during the recent parliamentary by-elections and the general elections.
Dressed in a black outfit, Kim expressed remorse during her court appearance, stating, "I sincerely apologize for causing trouble despite being a person of no importance." During Yoon's presidency, attempts to investigate his wife's alleged misconduct were routinely blocked, with Yoon himself vetoing three opposition-led bills for a special counsel inquiry.
Following Yoon's exit from power, a special counsel was established in June this year to further investigate the allegations against Kim, signaling a new chapter in South Korea's complex political landscape.
