In brief

Tunisia has launched a 10‑year action plan to reforest 30,000 hectares of forest, with priority species cork oak and Aleppo pine. Fires between 2011 and 2025 devastated 74,602 hectares and cost over 241 million Tunisian dinars, prompting the new strategy that will include digital monitoring, seedling production and private‑sector partnerships. The plan also marks National Tree Day on Nov. 8 under the slogan “A Tree Today, a Forest Tomorrow.”

On Tuesday, Tunisian authorities announced a 10‑year action plan to reforest 30,000 hectares of forest between 2026 and 2035, prioritising cork oak and Aleppo pine, according to Xinhua.

The plan comes after fires from 2011‑2025 that destroyed 74,602 hectares, costing about 241.16 million Tunisian dinars (roughly 80 million U.S. dollars), stated the report.

For the first season, 24,000 hectares will be covered, comprising 15,260 hectares of natural regeneration and 8,716 hectares of forest and pastoral plantations, and authorities will produce and plant 10 million seedlings, including 1.8 million for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Digital monitoring tools—including automated watchtowers and water reservoirs at elevated sites—will be part of the strategy to improve early detection and rapid response, the source added.

The strategy also stresses participatory management, mobilization of water resources, and climate financing, and calls for stronger private‑sector and civil‑society partnerships to sustain interventions.

Tunisia will celebrate National Tree Day on Nov. 8 with the slogan “A Tree Today, a Forest Tomorrow.”
