Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a 40-year-old Palestinian physician, passed away from severe injuries inflicted by an Israeli air strike in Gaza on May 23, health officials reported on Saturday. Tragically, the same attack also claimed the lives of nine of his children, while their 10th child remains critically injured in Nasser Hospital. On the day of the incident, Dr. al-Najjar had just returned home after dropping his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, at the hospital where they both worked, when their residence in Khan Younis was struck. The brutal airstrike left the family with devastating losses; their children, aged between six months to 12 years old, were killed, with only the couple's 11-year-old son Adam and his mother, Alaa, surviving.Dr. al-Najjar was hospitalized with grave injuries, which included damage to his brain and internal organs, and he died after several days of treatment. His brother, Dr. Ali al-Najjar, highlighted Hamdi's compassionate nature, noting his dedication to providing free medical care to poorer patients. In the wake of the tragedy, Adam's healthcare needs have raised urgent concerns. Graeme Groom, a British surgeon, described the painful irony faced by Alaa, a pediatrician used to caring for children—now she has almost lost her own. Adam has been critically affected, sustaining multiple severe injuries. The Italian government responded to an appeal from the surviving family, considering offers to transfer the seriously injured boy for better treatment options outside Gaza. The IDF, when addressing the strike, stated it was targeting individuals they believed were threats in what they described as a previously evacuated area to ensure civilian safety, though the results tell a different story. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, with reports indicating that over 54,418 individuals have perished in Gaza since the start of warfare, highlighting the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
