In brief

Data from the Ministry of Data and Statistics show industrial production grew 3.0%, retail sales jumped 3.6% and facility investment accelerated 5.3% in September. The rebound—after a contraction in August—was attributed by Xinhua to a booming semiconductor sector, the end of labor strikes at automakers and new vehicle launches. The seasonally adjusted industrial index is the fastest monthly gain in over 15 years.

South Korea’s industrial production, retail sales and facility investment all increased in September, marking the first triple rise in three months, according to data released by the Ministry of Data and Statistics on October 30.

Industrial output rose 3.0% from August, the fastest monthly rise in more than 15 years and reversing a 1.2% contraction in August. The uptick followed gains in the country’s semiconductor sector and the return of production after the end of labour strikes at major automakers.

Retail sales grew 3.6%, the largest increase in nearly three years. Durable goods, such as passenger cars, advanced 4.4% while non‑durable goods, including food and beverages, rose 4.2%.

Facility investment expanded 5.3% from the previous month after a 9.7% plunge in August, the highest turn‑around in a single month. The rebound is credited to higher spending on machinery (4.7%) and transportation equipment (7.4%).

Xinhua reported that the rebound was driven by the semiconductor boom, the conclusion of automaker labour strikes and new vehicle launches. No other outlet in the review cited these specific drivers.

The data underscore a recovery in the manufacturing sector and a revitalisation of consumer demand, as South Korea seeks to weather a sluggish global economic backdrop.

These figures suggest a strengthening industrial base and consumer confidence, potentially foreshadowing continued gains in the coming months.
