On a chilly evening in February, musician David López Ibáñez, a member of London’s Philharmonia orchestra, enjoyed a typical night out, just prior to a rehearsal. After performing, he and a friend decided to stop by a local pub for a snack and drink. As he leaned his beloved violin case against a bench next to him, he didn't anticipate the quick theft that would soon occur.
Unbeknownst to him, a thief had discretely snatched the case, concealing it under a long, beige coat, and left the pub undetected. It wasn't until López Ibáñez stood up that he realized his cherished instrument was gone, leading him to express his disbelief and sense of loss.
“This violin was more than an object; it was my companion for eight years, traveled with me across the globe,” he shared. Craftsmanship of the highest degree, the violin was created in 1740 by renowned Italian maker Lorenzo Carcassi and carries a staggering valuation exceeding £150,000 (around $200,000).
“It’s easy to let your guard down for just a moment,” he lamented, reflecting on the shock and despair of losing an irreplaceable item. The Metropolitan Police are now appealing to the public for tips that could aid in the recovery of the stolen violin and the identification of the suspect responsible.
