In brief
In a significant development following an April minerals agreement with the United States, Ukraine’s government is taking initial steps to open bidding for private investors to mine essential lithium deposits. This move marks the first action related to the deal, which aims to boost both Ukraine's economy and U.S. interests in mineral resources.
On June 16, Ukraine approved drafting proposals to facilitate the mining of the Dobra lithium field, a major state-owned reserve crucial for electric battery production. Key investors, including a consortium linked to the U.S. government, are eyeing this opportunity, having advocated for the project since late 2023. Under the agreement, half of the generated revenue will feed into a U.S.-Ukraine investment fund, designated for economic reinvestment in Ukraine. However, drafting these recommendations may take weeks, and the government has yet to confirm the bidding process publicly, indicating that decisions remain fluid.
