In brief
Airbnb has launched a revamped app that allows users to book luxury offerings such as personal trainers, massages, and chefs, aiming to blend hotel-like services with its traditional rental model.
Airbnb has announced that its redesigned app will now include luxury services such as personal chefs, massages, and personal trainers, marking a significant shift for the popular home rental platform. "People choose hotels for their services. People choose Airbnbs for the space... now, we're giving you the best of both worlds,” stated CEO Brian Chesky. This new initiative follows recent signals indicating a potential slowdown in bookings in the U.S., influenced by volatile trade policies. Since its inception in 2008, Airbnb has accommodated over two billion guests, but it confronts various challenges, particularly from local governments enacting regulations against short-term rentals. The new luxury services will be available in 260 cities and are priced starting under $50. Notably, these services can also be booked by individuals who are not actual Airbnb guests. In addition to services, the app features an updated experiences tab, allowing users to reserve customized tours and unique activities—a concept that debuted in 2016. The addition of hotel-like features responds to evolving traveler demands, as noted by travel marketing expert Gary Bowerman, who emphasizes the growing need for personalization in travel experiences. Furthermore, an "originals" tab offers exclusive activities, such as playing beach volleyball in Rio de Janeiro with Olympian Carol Solberg or spending a Sunday with NFL star Patrick Mahomes. Luxury travel consultant Anastasia Oriordan points out that there is an increasing desire among travelers for unique experiences, noting that as travel evolves, the desire for distinctive adventures continues to grow.
