In brief

In a bid to enhance its reputation as a family destination, Albufeira is considering a ban on wearing swimwear in public areas outside beaches, with fines reaching up to €1,500. Local authorities respond to excessive party behavior, aiming for a safer coastal environment.

The southern Portuguese city of Albufeira is moving forward with plans to impose restrictions on tourists regarding swimwear in public areas. Under the new guidelines, which are currently out for public consultation, visitors may soon face fines of up to €1,500 (£1,250) for wearing bikinis or going shirtless beyond the beach. This initiative follows an increase in public nudity and inappropriate behavior, particularly noted after an incident last year where a group of British tourists was filmed dancing naked in broad daylight on Rua da Oura, the city's main nightlife street. The videos garnered significant attention, prompting local authorities to respond to residents' concerns about maintaining a family-friendly image.Albufeira's updated code of conduct aligns with regulations seen in other popular European cities such as Barcelona, Dubrovnik, and Nice, which also enforce similar laws aimed at curbing public nudity and inappropriate actions. Mayor José Carlos Rolo emphasized the need for these measures, underscoring the importance of preserving Albufeira as a multicultural, safe destination for all visitors.Additional proposed regulations would also prohibit public sex acts and extend to terraces visible from public spaces, imposing penalties on business operators that do not manage behaviors effectively. With the beach town's summer season approaching, local leaders are keen to finalize these rules to ensure a more pleasant atmosphere for all who visit.
