Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a domestic-related investigation, authorities have said. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated that the gunman was fatally shot by responding police.

The incident occurred just after 2:00 PM local time (6:00 PM GMT), with disturbing images showing an officer being airlifted to a hospital via medical helicopter. The shooting prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order at a local school district in Spring Grove, a small town of around 2,500 residents, although the school was later confirmed to be unaffected.

Officials indicated there was no active threat to the public as the incident unfolded in a rural area of York County, approximately 100 miles (160km) west of Philadelphia. The situation stemmed from an investigation that began the day prior.

Commissioner Paris noted that further details would be withheld as the investigation is ongoing. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro arrived on the scene later in the day to meet with the families of the officers who lost their lives. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country. In a show of respect, he ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-mast in memory of the fallen officers.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that agents were on site to assist local and state law enforcement. He shared his thoughts and prayers with the relatives of the officers and the community of York County as they mourn this tragic event.
