ATLANTA — Police arrested a man at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday following a tip from his family about his intentions to commit a mass shooting. Billy Joe Cagle, 49, was found parked outside the airport in a Chevrolet pickup truck containing an AR-15 assault rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition. Cagle apparently livestreamed his plans on social media.
Police Chief Darin Schierbaum praised the family for their vigilance, which led to a successful intervention and the prevention of what could have been a tragic event. Cagle has been charged with making terroristic threats and possession of firearms by a felon, among other charges. Officials are working with federal authorities to investigate how he obtained the firearm legally.
As police apprehended Cagle, surveillance footage captured him as he arrived at the airport, walking towards the TSA checkpoint. Authorities are relieved that the threat was neutralized before anyone could be harmed. Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem commended those involved in averting the potential tragedy.
