Two detainees have died and another is critically injured after a rooftop sniper opened fire at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centre in Dallas, Texas, officials say.

The gunman fired indiscriminately at the ICE facility and at a nearby unmarked van, law enforcement officials say, before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No law enforcement were injured. FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo on X of unused ammunition recovered from the scene. One casing has the phrase ANTI-ICE on it.

This is the latest in a string of attacks on ICE facilities in recent months as the agency ramps up efforts to deliver on US President Donald Trump's pledge for mass deportations.

While the investigation is ongoing, Patel stated that the evidence shows an ideological motive behind this attack, which he described as a despicable, politically motivated attack against law enforcement.\

Dallas police reported that the suspect opened fire from an adjacent building, targeting both the ICE office and a van outside where victims were shot. The facility in question is used for processing recently arrested detainees, not as a detention center.

Joshua Johnson, acting director of the Dallas ICE office, expressed his frustration, emphasizing the need for a cessation of inflammatory rhetoric. This point was echoed by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who condemned politically motivated violence and the demonization of political opponents.

In a broader context, this incident follows multiple past attacks on ICE offices, including protests and threats. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem remarked that the shooting serves as a wake-up call to recognize the consequences of anti-ICE rhetoric.
