In brief
Firefighters are currently engaged in battling multiple wildfires on the Greek island of Chios after an emergency was declared over the weekend, leading to evacuations in several villages. The Hellenic Fire Service reported three distinct fires ignited on Sunday in locations including Kofina, Agia Anna, and Agios Makarios Vrontadon, mobilizing more than 190 firefighters, with an additional force of 170 scheduled to arrive the following day. The aerial fleet comprises 13 helicopters and four firefighting planes assisting in containment efforts.
Chios, known as a popular destination for summer travelers, has been grappling with adverse climatic conditions that have exacerbated the situation. "The situation on the island has been quite difficult... new fronts and resurgences continue," stated Giannis Kefalogiannis, Greece’s Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, highlighting the ongoing challenges. The recent uptick in wildfires aligns with rising temperatures and dry conditions, compounded by shifting climate patterns. The government has preemptively increased firefighting resources and invested over 2 billion euros in fire detection technologies in anticipation of intensified fire seasons. As crews work tirelessly on the ground, additional support from firefighters is arriving via boat and air to bolster efforts against the rapidly spreading flames. Authorities are also investigating the fires for potential arson, as they ignited in quick succession within an hour of each other.
