In brief
In early March, President Trump informed major auto executives, including Mary Barra of General Motors, John Elkann of Stellantis, and Jim Farley of Ford, that a new wave of tariffs would be imposed starting April 2. The auto leaders had previously expressed concerns that the 25 percent tariffs on vehicles imported from Canada and Mexico could significantly disrupt their operations and supply chains. However, despite having secured a temporary extension, it became evident that their pleas had fallen on deaf ears, as Trump appears steadfast in his belief that tariffs are essential to address what he perceives as economic injustices perpetrated by foreign nations.
