In brief

Authorities in Norway arrested 27-year-old Mohamed Orahhou, a security guard at the U.S. embassy, for allegedly passing classified information to Russia and Iran. The Oslo court has ordered him detained for four weeks while investigations continue, raising concerns about increased espionage activities linked to Russia in Europe.

Authorities in Norway have arrested a 27-year-old man, Mohamed Orahhou, who worked as a security guard at the U.S. embassy in Oslo. He is accused of passing sensitive information to Russian and Iranian officials. During his interrogation, Orahhou reportedly confessed to sharing intelligence with a member of Russia’s domestic intelligence service, known as the S.V.R., and with unnamed Iranian operatives. Norwegian authorities have yet to disclose specific details about the data he allegedly exchanged. A court in Oslo has responded to the serious nature of these allegations by ordering Orahhou be held in custody for four weeks, during which further investigations will take place. A subsequent hearing is also planned."This is a very serious case," remarked Thomas Blom from Norway's Police Security Service, suggesting that investigations into Orahhou's activities may uncover more concerning developments. This arrest occurs amid growing fears of Russian espionage across Europe, marked by recent incidents involving attacks and threats linked to Russian operatives. Additionally, U.S. intelligence agencies have issued warnings to American defense contractors regarding potential Russian sabotage efforts, reflecting the escalating tension and scrutiny over Russian intelligence operations within Europe. Furthermore, Ken McCallum, head of the British intelligence agency MI5, had previously stated that Russian agents are on a course to create chaos in British and European cities—a statement that underscores the gravity and urgency of the current security situation in the region.
